Bad luck? I will watch the replay now but in 2v2 it´s common that planes get shoot far away from the PE´s base if you have LoS. Without LoS you´re fucked thou. Same goes for other AA stuff.
Actually those base defenses on some maps cover almost half of it.
Looking at Angoville, the smallest map I could think of:

The base defence MAYBE covers a third of the map, basically the base sector, and the edges of a few other sectors.
Even still, it doesn't eliminate Airborne in the slightest. You can still drop AA + Recoiless in your territory quite safely (and I've rarely seen anyone drop Airborne into the middle of a fight. Supply Drops still work fine, unless you were planning on dropping MGs and Mortars into their base.
I'm just not seeing the issue with making AA effective. I'm not talking about making the range huge.
I have had the airborne player send a recon plane over my base where i had 3 squads reinforcing and he sent a strafing run over my base killing all my mans. My base flaks didnt hit either the recon plane or the strafing plane.
Woah, that Flak 88 aiming was only five years too late! I see the Wehrmacht gunners are efficient as ever...
Anywho, AA in general is silly. Sometimes the guns will ignore planes, other times they'll try to shoot it down but their rotation is too slow, as evident in that video they'll sometimes just point at the plane and admire it as it rains down death and destruction, or they'll shoot the plane down and it lands on something of yours. Something expensive.
the other companies / doctrines off map barrage isn't counterable. the delivery mechanism for each is pretty arbitrary and i think they just chose planes for airborne rather than artillery because it's more in keeping with the company theme.
i think AA should tear up airdropped paras and AT guns if they drop within range but countering SR and BR when other off map call ins can't be may cause an imbalance.
