Microsoft to replace IE with Project Spartan

By FallenXE - 26th March 2015 - 11:47 AM

Earlier in January at the Windows 10 preview, Microsoft told audiences and consumers that the writing was on the wall for their longstanding browser Internet Explorer. Now after their Convergence event recently held in March, we are finally able to shine more light as to what is IE's replacement, the browser codenamed Project Spartan.

Internet Explorer will be sidelined to a secondary role in this summer's Windows 10 OS release, with rumours going as far as stating that it will be a separate download altogether. Certain versions of Windows 10 will have IE pre-included but these are mostly for enterprise versions for companies that require backward compatibility with earlier versions of IE.

Microsoft Chief of Marketing, Chris Capossela, stated that the final product itself would not be named Project Spartan and that they were still conducting research as to what it should be called. There is a high chance however, that it will have the Microsoft brand name at the front, due to a recent poll that the Big M conducted in the UK where a potential product having Microsoft as its first name appealed better to Google Chrome users.

One thing is for sure however, that Cortana - Microsoft's answer to Google Now and Apple's Siri, will not only be fully integrated with Windows 10 but also with Project Spartan, in that it answers potential queries made within the browser's own UI and that it has its own sidebar, as the following WinBeta demo video can attest to.

Last but not least, by the way of PCGamer,

Another announcement, via Reuters, is that the free upgrades we knew Microsoft was planning on offering will extend not just to genuine, but non-genuine license holders of the OS. That means those who have naughtily pirated versions of old Windows builds will be getting a free update to the new, shiny Windows 10.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, all of us (as long as you are running Windows 7 and 8.1) will be blessed with Windows 10, Project Spartan and and Cortana free of charge. Is this a right step forward by Microsoft, do give us your thoughts below!
