Description
The backbone of the Terran army often consists of a large number of Marines. While the enemy is still in the lower levels of the technology tree a squad of Marines is a force to be reckoned with, yet as the game advances newer technologies become available and the Marines need a bit of backup to hold their ground. This is where an essential unit of the Terran arsenal comes into play: that unit being the medic. The medic is an unusual unit since it is unable to fight, but it more then makes up for this weakness in its support role. The medic is able to heal Marines, Reapers, Ghosts, SCVs, and other medics for free. This affords a Terran player great flexibility for with proper micromanagement a Terran player can dramatically extend the lifetime of his infantry.
Much like its Broodwar counterpart the Starcraft 2 medic has the ability to fire flares; however, the purpose of the optical flare has changed. Now the medics flare is used to reveal unexplored territory giving some exciting scouting possibilities for the Medic.
Strategy
MM Combo: As in the original Starcraft one popular strategy is the Marine – Medic combo. As the name implies, this is where a large number of Marines are supported by a group of Medics. The Marines can use their stim-pack ability at key moments, while the Medics can heal them before the ill effects of the stim-packs are realized. With a little bit of micro and ton of M&Ms the enemy better rethink their strategy.
While the Marine Medic combo is almost certainly going to be seen later in any game, a very popular strategy is to quickly rush towards this combo. Medics can be built from a Barracks that has the Tech-Lab add-on.
Unit Abilities Healing: Regenerates health of injured infantry.
Optical Flare: Reveals Unexplored Territory.
