REPLAY REVIEW BY Asko - 14-10-2007
---------------------------------

Match Overview
An intense game between Ottomans and French on Orinoco in which VooDoo_BoSs as Ottomans despite the huge disadvantage provided by the map without water or Trade Route goes for a very aggressive Janissary harassing and snatches the control of the game by building a forward base very close to NeD__´s main base. Ned chose to mass Crossbowmen against Ottomans but built only 1 barracks, thus he was forced on the defensive side of playing in front of Voodoo´s army. Small confrontations between armies follow and every time Voodoo manages to take down a Coureur des Bois and houses to set back Ned´s economy. After a while Voodoo builds a foundry and adds Abus Guns in the mix and Ned answers with Hussars but still can´t really attack Voodoo to get some map control and is forced to go early on mills to gather food. A significant turning point in the game follows when Ned manages to get 9 of Voodoo´s villagers and to defeat most of Voodoo´s army in an intense battle in his base. Voodoo manages to migrate part of his army back to his forward base and to refield his army but by an accident he runs his soldiers right in to the hands of Ned´s military and suffers huge losses from which he never recovered. Ned eventually starts sieging the defenceless forward base of Voodoo who admits defeat and resigns.

Very intensive harassing with Janissaries and later Abus Guns provided you 100 % control of the game but you could have spammed military even more early on if you had had a market with the upgrades. Also when you saw your opponent was going for Crossbowmen dropping down a foundry earlier for Abus Guns would have won you the game very early on. Your constant pressure from allowed you to slow down the French economy by keeping him off resources but you lost many Abus Guns to his Hussars around 15:00 when they when your Janissaries weren´t set on melee mode. You played very well but losing the big battle in Ned´s base cost you the dominance of the game when you lost a very big part of your army because of poor micro. Not too long after you ran your army straight to the hands of Ned from which you couldn´t recover and were forced to resign.
    Tips for Improvement
  • Use [Shift]-click building to avoid idle villager seconds after a building is finished
  • Work on your micro: Try avoiding overkills, you don´t need to focus fire of 29 Janissaries on a single Crossbowman but try to micro then units on smaller groups to multiply the firepower. Also you lost a big battle at around 28:00 in Ned´s base because your units were disorganized: ignore the Hussars with Abus guns and focus them to fire on the infantry and set Janissaries on melee mode to kill the Hussars quickly.
  • Get a mosque and the first villager build limit upgrade as soon as possible after you have reached 25 villagers to compete with French economy. Here you chose to build military instead but the upgrades and the mosque are only worth of ~6 Abus Guns in villager seconds so you could have chosen differently.
  • You lost 9 villagers to 3 Hussars because of unsafe gathering. Always when your villagers are gathering far away from your main base build an outpost or two next to the gathering site as your first act for map control and security in case of raids.

You defended your colony well against Voodoo´s harassing but you could have ended his reign of terror earlier if you had built a double barracks early on so you could have outspammed Voodoo earlier. You lost a lot of Coureurs and houses to his harassing so walling off would have been a great idea along with placing mills behind your Town Center so your gatherers would have been safe. Also every time you started chasing his Janissaries with your Crossbowmen don´t hesitate to follow Voodoo´s army and to hit and run every time you can because Crossbowmen have a advantage over them in range. Your superb raiding saved you the game when you managed to get approximately 15 villagers in total which slowed Voodoo´s military production significantly down. Another important factor to your victory was winning the 2 bigger battles at around 28:00 and 32:00 in which you could take down most of Voodoo´s army without suffering big losses yourself and Voodoo was forced to resign.
    Tips for Improvement
  • Your Coureur des Bois production wasn´t stabile here, tap [T] and [V] every so often to ensure a constant flow of settlers to keep your economy going.
  • Your economy management need improving: at one point you had over 600 floating wood and not too many minutes later you had over 1k gold and virtually no other resources. If you see that you have extra of resource X and you are lacking resource Y shift gatherers between X and Y to balance your income.
  • Against Ottomans it is vital to get 2 barracks up as soon as possible that you can defend properly from rush and harassing
  • When you were forced on mills early a good idea would have been to snatch the nearby Mayan settlement which offer a technology which boosts Mill and animal gathering rates by 10 %.

I am surprised you never said anything about the 900 ungathered crates of wood (3 shipments) around Voodoo's TC??? I think this is a huge mistake by voodoo... if he had gathered them he could have built a mosque and after that you know that the game would have ended another way...

No. It was a matter of time till he would have overtaken me. Wood was not the problem. I could have built a mosque at any point of the game, and even if I had built a mosque, what would the other 700 wood do? Don't think there are any mosque upgrades which cost wood tongue.gif.

Increase to 45 settler pop limit = 400 coin
Increase to 75 settler pop limit = 400 coin & 400 wood
Increase to 99 settler pop limit = 400 food & 400 coin & 400 wood
