Probe

IPB Image The Protoss Probe is the cornerstone of any Protoss base. Built at the Protoss Nexus the probe expands a Protoss base by creating an anchor in the realworld and reaching into the psionic matrix, allowing a probe to warp in Protoss structures from other planets and galaxies. In addition to this the probe is the resource gatherer for the Protoss, bringing in Vespene Gas and Minerals for use by the Protoss armies.

Zealot

IPB Image A classic StarCraft unit armed with psi-blades and protected by heavy armor. These warriors have trained since their youth and it shows as they fulfill their heavy assault troop role. The Zealot is a ground based, Protoss melee infantry unit. Like all Protoss units, the Zealot is equipped with a personal protective shield which effectively adds to his health, turning him into an early-game tank, of sorts.

Stalker

IPB ImageThe essence of a Dark Templar fused into a mechanical casing, the Protoss Stalker utilizes the much-honed Dark Templar arts of stealth to strike unseen from the shadows. Essentially the dark version of a classic Starcraft Dragoon, the Stalker is the first mechanical unit available for the Protoss at the Gateway after the construction of a Cybernetics Core. In this sense, it replaces the Dragoons in the Protoss tech tree.

Immortal

IPB Image From the few remaining veteran Dragoons came the Immortals. The Immortal is a ground based Protoss ranged unit, similar to the original Dragoon, yet vastly different. The difference lies in how one would utilize these units in battle. Available only after constructing a Twilight Council, the Immortal is not an early-game unit, and its true effectiveness doesn't come into play until after a critical upgrade - Hardened Shields.

Nullifier

IPB Image Available at the Gateway after a Cybernetics Core, the Nullifier is a ground-based support unit that hovers over the battlefield and uses weaponry that slows down the movement speed and attacking rate of a single enemy unit, whether air or ground. This temporary replacement to the Star Relic has yet to show its true power, but it remains to be seen whether the Nullifier can effectively complement a Protoss ground force in battle.

High Templar

IPB ImageReturning from classic Starcraft, these esteemed spellcasters of the Khala wield devastating abilities that can easily change the tide of battle. With a psionic storm, a swarm of Zerglings or other similar units will be decimated from afar. The psionic storm is an area of effect ability that deals heavy damage to units within its area over time. When a few High Templars are used in collaboration with one another, an expert player can wreak havoc within enemy lines and wipe out entire forces with just a few accurate casts of this ability. The High Templar is also able to merge with another High Templar or Dark Templar to form the mighty Twilight Archon, allowing Templars to continue to dominate the battlefield even after they have exhausted their energy supply.IPB Image

Dark Templar

IPB ImageFunctionally identical to the Dark Templars of old, these shadowy warriors are permanently cloaked assassins that can cause total chaos among enemy formations or economies on their own if the opponent is caught without detection. Wielding double-bladed Warp Scythes, these deadly warriors pour fourth tremendous amounts of damage, making skilful use of them extremely rewarding as the tides of battle can be turned with these in an instant. They don't have staying power though, so use them carefully around enemy detection.IPB Image

Twilight Archon

IPB ImageWhile High Templars and Dark Templars wield very different forms of psionic power, all templar souls have the innate ability to merge with another to form a powerful psionic entity that is the Twilight Archon. The Twilight Archon combines the traditional Archon and Dark Archons into a single unit, meaning that 2 Templars of any combination (2 High Templars, a High Templar and a Dark Templar, or even 2 Dark Templars)will be able to merge and form a Twilight Archon. Functionally, these hulking monstrosities resemble the Archons of classic Starcraft, wielding an unspeakably powerful Psionic Shockwave that can quickly send even the sturdiest of enemies into submission. The Twilight Archon also holds the Feedback ability inherited from the Dark Archons of old, manipulating energy to allow them to turn caster units' own energy reserves into damage against themself. It is not known whether more abilities such as Mind Control or Maelstrom will be added, but it is already unmistakable that the Twilight Archon will be a force to be feared on the battlefield.IPB Image

Phase Prism

IPB Image The Phase Prism is an air based Protoss transport unit built from the Robotics Facility, similar to the Shuttle from classic Starcraft - however, Phase Prisms have a new ability which will make them invaluable on the field of battle. This new use is Phasing Mode, and it allows for three options. Phasing Mode provides a similar effect to that of a Pylon - which the Protoss use to power their buildings. For those of you who don't play Starcraft, any Protoss building not within a certain distance of a Pylon, (except for a Nexus, the main building,) becomes "unpowered" and loses all functions. Using Phasing Mode turns the Phase Prism into a Pylon at the cost of making it immobile, however it can be packed up again and moved once it has been deployed. The first use of Phasing Mode is to provide power for buildings which are unpowered after having a nearby Pylon destroyed, effectively allowing players to use less Pylons to power more buildings, as they have this "contingency plan", as such. Any building within range of the Phase Prism will be powered up again, and this also means that buildings can be built in the ground control provided by the Phase Prism, leading nicely onto the second use.The second use is the quick construction of forward bases. Previously, in Brood War, any Protoss player would have to summon a Pylon at a point on the map before being able to build there. Now, with the Phase Prism, the Protoss player can deploy the Prism and build underneath it, so long as that Prism stays alive. This will enable more proxy-rushes (building in the fog of war near an enemy's base). The final use of the Phase Prism is in conjunction with the new Protoss "warp-in" ability, allowing Protoss units to be trained and deployed anywhere where the psionic matrix from a Pylon or Phase Prism covers. With deployed Phase Prisms, units can be warped in onto the ground underneath the Phase Prism to provide quick reinforcements for an emergency defense or a sudden attack on an enemy base from an unexpected corner of the map.The Phase Prism, as you can see, has a number of uses and will doubtless be used to punish those who do not prepare for it.IPB Image

Observer

IPB Image Functionally identical to the Observers of classic Starcraft, these aerial robotic units are constructed at the Robotics Facility after the construction of a Null Circuit. The observer is a permanently cloaked aerial unit that serves as the mobile detectors of the Protoss race, and effective Observer use allows the Protoss to have accurate information on what the enemy is doing. The Observer will also be able to upgrade its sight range at the Null Circuit. IPB Image

Colossus

IPB ImageThis massive Protoss unit looks down on the battlefield below. From this vantage point, this Protoss mechanical masterpiece arms its twin lasers, which can liquefy enemy units. Like the Stalker, the Colossus is able to traverse cliffs that are impassable by other units by virtue of their sheer size, walking up and down cliffs like they were flat ground and thus allowing for an escape from ground units if needed. As good as this expensive unit may be against swarms of Zerglings, it is helpless against air attacks and larger ground units. Another disadvantage the Colossus must cope with is that air-attacking units can hit it due to its height. This means missile turrets, spore colonies, and anti-air flyers will be able to hit the Colossus. The Colossus is available at the Robotics Facility after warping in a Robotics Support Bay, much like the Reavers of classic Starcraft.IPB Image

Phoenix

IPB Image The Phoenix is the next generation of air superiority fighters in StarCraft II. It replaces both the Corsairs and the Scouts from the original, being able to hit both land and air. If needed, the Phoenix can temporarily overload, causing all nearby units to be seriously damaged. For a short period afterwards, the Phoenix is unable to fire and move while its systems come back online. This makes it great against massive numbers of weak air units. Used correctly, a swarm of Mutalisks will die in an instant. Unfortunately, while the Phoenix might be great against light air units, heavy air units will shoot it out of the sky before it has a chance to fire back. The Phoenix is currently considered to be imbalanced from the BlizzCon build, being that it is early in the tech tree (requiring nothing except the Stargate), fast with decent range, and has decent damage against both air and ground units. An easily-massed force of Phoenixes can brutally destroy an enemy's economy or army while leaving very little room for retaliation. It remains to be seen how Blizzard would tweak this unit.IPB Image

Warp Ray

IPB ImageWhile the Phoenix does poorly against heavy air units, the Warp Ray loves the sight of them. Once a Ray has locked on, they slowly increase the quantity of damage dealt per second to their opponent. The mighty Terran Battlecrusier is nothing against one of these. Given their increasing attack over time, buildings are also the perfect targets for the Warp Ray. Small units require the Warp Ray to retarget constantly thus making it an easy target for a group of marines or other similar units.IPB Image

Carrier

IPB ImageThe Carrier was originally to be the Tempest, a "dark" version of the Carrier, but the development team decided to bring the old and much loved Carriers back in the BlizzCon build. Functionally, the Carrier is identical to its classic Starcraft counterpart, spawning Interceptors that attack the enemy. The only difference is that an auto-build function that is activated by a right-click is available for Interceptor construction, removing the need to constantly check on each Carrier to see if they are well stocked up on Interceptors.IPB Image

Mothership

IPB ImageThe pinnacle of the Protoss Tech Tree, the Mothership is the Protoss "super-unit", supporting the battle with a vast array of weapons and abilities. Apart from devastating in-built weaponry, the Mothership can cast a Time Bomb over an area to slow down enemy attacks (including projectile weapons) and movements, launch a Planet Cracker to deal tremendous damage in an area to all ground units, or deploy a cloaking field that can cloak all units and even buildings under the Mothership. The Black Hole ability that can devastate entire fleets of air units has been removed from the BlizzCon build. There is currently no build limit to the Mothership as it is not designed as a unit that can win battles on its own, but more of an extremely potent support unit. It is relatively poor against air units, and can quickly be dispatched by an enemy air force if not well-protected. Skilful use of the Mothership would no doubt be pivotal to a Protoss player's success in the late game.IPB Image

Soul Hunter

IPB ImageThe Soul Hunter has not passed the unit training Camp of Blizzard. While it seemed interesting for a season it has not made the final cut. Here is what the Soul Hunter was set to be before Blizzard removed it from the game.
This Protoss unit is new to Starcraft 2, being a ground warrior that fires lasers while riding upon some form of hover board. They are great against organic units while doing little damage to mechanical units such as the Protoss Reaver. The Soul Hunter deals additional damage to units the more Souls they take. Put them up a squad of Marines and soon the Terran will regret building them. In the gameplay videos one sees a legion of these slaughter a Terran base within seconds.
IPB Image

Reaver

IPB Image The Reaver is a classic unit from the original Starcraft. This slow-moving unit constructs Scarabs and stores them in itself, and can launch these Scarabs which are extremely devastating energy bombs towards enemy targets in range. Effective use of Reavers in tandem with Shuttles was a big part of Protoss micromanagement in classic Starcraft. As of the BlizzCon build, the Reaver has been removed from the game, much to the disdain of many lovers of this unique and potent unit. It remains to be seen whether Blizzard will include the Reaver in the release of the game. IPB Image

Star Relic

IPB Image The Star Relic was going to be the prime spellcaster of the Protoss race. Two of this unit's abilities include a cloak and a fusion beam. The cloak can be cast on both buildings and units alike rendering them temporality invisible. The exact mechanics of this have yet to be released but one can imagine cloaking a group of Zealots and then decimating an enemys economy. A second ability, the fusion beam, allows the Star Relic to target a single unit with a high-powered beam. This beam continues until the targeted unit dies, after which a massive explosion causes damage to all the units around it. The bigger the units that is targeted the bigger the explosion and collateral damage will be. As of the BlizzCon build, the Star Relic has been replaced by the Stasis Orb, with its Cloaking Field ability given instead to the Mothership. It remains to be seen whether this unit can make it back into the final release of the game.IPB Image
